EngageNY, CGI, and much more!

As a school we have found that the EngageNY math curriculum is the most rigorous and the most comprehensive. The kids are spending more time thinking about math, solving problems, and justifying their thinking with multiple strategies. We also use elements of Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI math) as well. We also like to use games, Zearnmath, number talks, and MARS tasks to engage students and help them grow in math! Included on this page is the overall concepts for each module of the EngageNY curriculum, useful academic vocabulary, and several examples of student work. Hopefully this resource will be helpful to you!

"Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) is a student-centered approach to teaching math. It starts with what your students already know and builds on their natural number sense and intuitive approaches to problem solving. Rather than a math program or curriculum, CGI is a way of listening to students, asking smart questions, and engaging with their thinking—all with the goal of uncovering and expanding every student’s mathematical understanding." -Heinemann

EngageNY Parent Tips

Last year, many parents were confused by the way the math was presented by the EngageNY curriculum. These videos will outline the key concepts introduced in each lesson. When going over math homework with your child, these videos can help familiarize you with the specific strategies and concepts introduced in each lesson.
(*They can help keep your child up to speed if they are absent!)
