Second-Grade Curriculum

At Rio del Mar we are a "workshop school" and use Reading and Writing Workshop which is part of a balanced approach to literacy and teaches literacy based on student-need and is engaging and fun for students! We teach a mini-lesson focused on a small skill or strategy and students apply what they have learned independently, in a small group or one-on-one with the teacher.

More about Readers and Writers Workshop

In math, we use Engage New York curriculum (sometimes called "Eureka Math") and incorporate number talks, games, and technology to meet the needs of all students and to make math hands-on. In second grade, students need to have mastery of addition and subtraction fluency facts which is the foundation of much of the math we do.

We will share more about the "nuts and bolts" about the curriculums we use, learning goals for the school year and strategies you can use at home to support your child. We are looking forward to sharing more at our Back to School Night on August 29th.

Welcome to Second-Grade!

Dear Rio families,
Welcome to second grade! We are thrilled to be starting a brand new school year with your child in second-grade. This year will be filled with fun, friendship, and important foundational skills that your child will build on each year of school.

Second-grade is an important year for developing reading fluency- students are focusing on fluently and accurately decoding what they are reading and learning to strengthen their comprehension skills simultaneously.

In math, students will be developing a stronger number sense and learn strategies to help them persevere through multi-step problems. This year students are learning to be more independent and a big focus in the year is learning critical thinking skills and a deeper knowledge of math strategies.

In our classrooms, we are firm believers in establishing a community of learners where each child feels valued and cared about. Consistency with routines and clear expectations help students feel secure in the classroom, allow them to focus on their learning, and help them to develop positive peer relationships. Like many teachers at Rio del Mar, we use Positive Discipline in class and help students learn responsibility and create a climate of positivity and mutual respect. We are also strong supporters of the Growth Mindset and hope to encourage students to try their best each day! We are looking forward to a wonderful school year ahead!

Warmly,
The Second Grade Teachers
